Senior Estimating Sales Engineer / Production Engineer

Industry: Subcontract Precision Engineering (Oil & Gas & Aerospace)

Location: Chessington, Surrey

Reports To: The Director 

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and commercially astute Senior Estimating Sales Engineer/Production Engineer to join a long-established engineering company based in Chessington, Surrey with a world leading reputation for the provision of deep hole drilling and precision subcontract machining services. 

This role sits at the intersection of sales, estimating, and production, supporting business growth by delivering accurate, competitive quotations while ensuring manufacturability and operational efficiency.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in subcontract machining environments, with specific exposure to the oil & gas and aerospace sectors, and a deep understanding of complex component manufacturing.

 

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Commercial:

  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for CNC machined components and assemblies from customer RFQs, drawings, and specifications.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, including GD&T, materials, tolerances, and surface finishes.
  • Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing for external processes (e.g. heat treatment, coating, NDT). 
  • Support pricing strategy to ensure competitiveness while maintaining margin targets. 
  • Engage with customers during quotation stages to clarify technical and commercial requirements.

Sales & Customer Interface:

  • Act as a technical point of contact for key customers in oil & gas and aerospace sectors. 
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, supporting repeat and new business opportunities. 
  • Participate in customer meetings, technical reviews, and contract negotiations.
  • Identify opportunities for value engineering and cost reduction. 

Production & Engineering Support:

  • Collaborate with production, planning, and quality teams to ensure smooth project handover.
  • Review manufacturability and advise on optimal machining methods, tooling, and processes. 
  • Support process planning, fixture design, and continuous improvement initiatives. 
  • Provide technical input to resolve production challenges and non-conformances. 

Compliance & Quality:

  • Ensure all estimates and processes align with industry standards such as AS9100, ISO 9001, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Understand sector-specific requirements including traceability, material certification, and regulatory compliance.

 

Key Requirements

Experience:

  • Minimum 5–10 years’ experience in precision engineering / subcontract machining. 
  • Proven experience in estimating and/or production engineering roles.
  • Strong exposure to oil & gas and/or aerospace components and standards. 

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent understanding of CNC machining processes (turning, milling, multi-axis). 
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and estimating software. 
  • Knowledge of materials (e.g. Inconel, titanium, stainless steels, duplex). 
  • Familiarity with special processes (NDT, coatings, heat treatment). 

Commercial Awareness:

  • Strong cost analysis and pricing skills. 
  • Understanding of margins, overhead recovery, and business profitability. 
  • Ability to balance technical feasibility with commercial viability.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills. 
  • High attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Senior Quality Control Inspector

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and dynamic Senior Quality Engineer Inspector to join a long-established engineering company based in our facility in Chessington, Surrey with a world leading reputation for the provision of deep hole drilling and precision subcontract machining services. 

The ideal candidate will be an expert in CMM inspection, ideally with Wenzel systems, while remaining hands-on with traditional manual measurement tools. You will play a key role in verifying complex components and mentoring our next generation of engineers. The Senior Quality Control Inspector will work with a dedicated team supplying highly complex drilled machined parts to large blue-chip customers in sectors including Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Automotive and Aerospace. 

 Responsibilities:

  • CMM Inspection: Perform high-level inspection using Wenzel CMMs.

Note: While experience with Wenzel “Quartis” is highly preferred, we will provide comprehensive bridge training for experienced operators coming from PC-DMIS or Calypso backgrounds.

  • Manual Metrology: Conduct bench inspections using a full suite of traditional instruments:
    • Micrometers (External/Internal/Depth).
    • Digital Height Gauges and Surface Finish testers.
    • Bore gauges and specialized thread measurement tools.
  • Inspection Reporting / FAIR: Create and verify First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) to AS9102 standards.
  • Mentorship: Train other less experienced Inspectors in both digital and manual measurement techniques.
  • Problem Solving: Liaise with the machine shop to resolve dimensional issues and improve process stability.

Requirements:

  • Technical Foundation: Background in precision mechanical engineering or manufacturing within an ISO-regulated environment (ISO 9001, AS9100, or equivalent), with mandatory hands-on experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
  • Software Agility: Experience with CMM programming. If you haven't used Wenzel, you must demonstrate a strong logical grasp of 3D metrology software and a willingness to learn a new system.
  • GD&T Expert: Total fluency in reading complex engineering drawings and geometric tolerances.
  • Versatility: You are as comfortable using a micrometer on the shop floor as you are running an automated CMM program in the lab.
  • Positive can-do attitude: Well organized, possessing excellent communication skills and the ability to work under strict deadlines.

What You Will Be Doing:

 The CNC Machinist will be responsible for setting and operating a 5 Axis Mazak VTC Mill. This is a permanent afternoon shift-based role after completion of training. The hours are : Afternoon Shift 14:00 – 12:00 Monday to Thursday, 38 hours as standard.

Required Experience:

  • 5 Axis setting/operating
  • Mazak VTC knowledge
  • Semiconductor/Medical industry experience preferred but not essential.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspection of machined parts, weldments, and assemblies as per customer’s drawings, specifications, and requirements through the use of various types of inspection equipment and CMM operation.
  • Initiate and follow up of Nonconformance as required.
  • Assist with material movement as relates to non-conforming product.
  • Verification of operator in-process checks.
  • Special Projects as directed by quality management.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment on multiple projects simultaneously (multitask) while maintaining high-levels of quality assurance practices.
  • Maintains a clean work environment to eliminate potential product contamination and damage.
  • Performing visual inspection checks on mechanical parts, weldments and various coatings and finishes (Anodising, Grit Blasting, Chromium Oxide).
  • Inspection on electrical and mechanical. components on incoming parts, material, in-process assemblies, and final product.
  • Review material specification and test reports against specification requirements.
  • Document inspection results in accordance. with customers requirements and any additional work instructions.
  • Vacuum Testing using Jigs and Fixtures.

 

Desired Experience:

  • Ability to read engineering drawings, bill of materials, quality plans, and other documents as needed is a must.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision and to follow written instructions and techniques.
  • Ability to exhibit a keen perception in all areas of quality assurance.
  • Be competent in the use of all metrology inspection and test equipment and CMM operation.
  • Proven track record of the highest integrity level.
  • Must be observant and good at paying attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of Excel, MSOffice, and Outlook.

As an expanding company, Mollart Engineering's facility in Resolven, South Wales, is looking for a general CNC machinist with a bias towards setting and operating a 5 Axis CNC machining centre.
