Only recently, we were contacted by an engineering company in Scotland with a problem application, which involved gun drilling a 3.5mm diameter hole in Inconel on their existing equipment. Inconel is a notoriously difficult material to machine, and their existing tooling was falling short. 

The Problem

Their initial setup was only achieving a depth of 25mm before requiring re-grinding. This frequent downtime was impacting productivity, and driving up costs. The client needed a solution that could deliver both performance and longevity, one that would enable them to drill deeper and faster, with less downtime for re-grinding.

The Solution 

Our specialist adviser in Scotland Brian Shepherd proposed they use the Botek Type 110 range of gun drills, with heat treated tube for extra strength and stability, which is perfect for drilling in demanding materials like Inconel.

Brian worked closely with the customer, providing on-site support and expertise to ensure the correct application of the drill. This hands-on approach is a hallmark of our commitment to customer success.

The Result

The customer is now able to drill over 330mm deep at up to 3x faster speeds before the need for re-grinding. This equates to an increase of over 8x tool life, with 3x faster cutting speeds, whilst maintaining a constant and stable process.
