Gundrilling Evolution - A modern slant on an old technique

As gundrilling at Mollart continues to develop and evolve, so does the variety of applications. Gundrilling has come a long way from its original intended use. It originates from the process used in the manufacture of gun barrels, where straightness and precision were essential for the correct functioning of the gun barrel. Today gundrilling is still used for this purpose, however, over time the process has been developed and its application greatly increased.

Modern gundrilling, also known as deep hole drilling is a process by which gundrilling machines accurately create holes with a high length to diameter ratio. When holes are greater than a 10:1 diameter to length ratio, regular drilling techniques become difficult and holding tolerances for drill drift are challenging. So the process of gundrilling can produce holes far longer than their diameter, typically up to 400 x diameter, with tight tolerances and superior surface finishes.

It is especially effective on difficult to drill materials such as titanium, Inconel and other exotic materials, which are frequently used in the aerospace, automotive and oil and gas sectors, or in producing intricate medical components, which very often require holes with thin walls, tight tolerances and very small diameters. However, its application is not limited to the manufacture of components for these sectors and is also used when the speed of production is an important factor.

Gundrills Over Conventional Drills

Gundrilling has the capability to drill holes with a greater depth to diameter ratio than the standard twist drill; this is achieved through the following:

  •  A guidance tool is built into its design.

  •  High pressure cutting coolant is used to flush chips and heat away from the cutting surface. This minimises blockages and overheating enabling deeper holes to be cut with more efficiency and accuracy.

  • The shape of the cutting edge also differs to a twist drill, with the standard gundrill having a single cutting edge and burnishing pads to improve the surface finish.

  • There are also different external forms which can be employed to make the guidance better for different circumstances.

We are able to give help and advice on guidance for your application, please get in touch for more information.
